Ralph Macchio

American actor Ralph Macchio Jr. (1961) became a teen idol with his role as Daniel LaRusso in three Karate Kid films. He is also known for his roles in The Outsiders (1983), My Cousin Vinny (1992), and the TV series Ugly Betty (2008-2009). Years later, he returned as Daniel LaRusso in the series Cobra Kai (2018-2025) and the film Karate Kid: Legends (2025).

An instant teen idol

Ralph George Macchio Jr. was born in Huntington, New York, in 1961. He is the son of Rosalie (née DeSantis) and Ralph Macchio, Sr., who owned a ranch. He has two younger brothers. His father is of half Italian and half Greek descent, and his mother is of Italian ancestry. Macchio began tap dancing lessons at the age of 3 and was discovered while performing an Eddie Cantor impression in a local dance recital at age 16.

An agent approached him and began sending him on auditions for commercials. In the late 1970s, he did commercials for Bubble Yum and Dr. Pepper. He made his film debut in the comedy Up the Academy (Robert Downey Sr., 1980), an attempt to cash in on the phenomenal and unexpected success of National Lampoon's Animal House (John Landis, 1978). He was then cast as Jeremy Andretti in the television series Eight Is Enough (1980-1981), and instantly became a teen heartthrob.

After Eight is Enough ended, Macchio won the role of Johnny Cade in The Outsiders (Francis Coppola, 1983), based on the popular S.E. Hinton novel about troubled youth. The coming-of-age drama was the start for several actors who would be collectively referred to throughout the 1980s as part of the Brat Pack: C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, and Tom Cruise.

This led him to be cast as Daniel LaRusso in the martial arts drama Karate Kid (John G. Avildsen, 1984). The film follows Daniel LaRusso (Macchio), a teenager taught Gōjū-ryū karate by Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) to help defend himself and compete in a tournament against his bullies, one of whom is the ex-boyfriend (William Zabka) of his love interest, Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue). In both films, Macchio portrayed characters who are younger than he was. At age 20, he played a 16-year-old Johnny Cade in The Outsiders. At age 22, he played the 17-year-old Daniel LaRusso for the first time in The Karate Kid.

The well-received film was among the highest-grossing films of 1984, and Macchio returned in two sequels, The Karate Kid Part II (John G. Avildsen, 1986) and The Karate Kid Part III (John G. Avildsen, 1989). He portrayed music student Eugene Martone in the film Crossroads (Walter Hill, 1986). Off and later on Broadway, he starred in 'Cuba and His Teddy Bear' (1986), alongside Robert De Niro. In 1989, he appeared in another off-Broadway show, 'Only Kidding'.

Forever, my Sensei

In 1992, Ralph Macchio starred opposite Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei in the hit comedy My Cousin Vinny (Jonathan Lynn, 1992), playing Billy Gambini, who was wrongfully accused of murder while passing through a small Alabama town. Despite the film's success, it failed to result in additional leading roles for Macchio in major films. On stage, Macchio performed the lead role of J. Pierrepont Finch in the musical 'How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying' (1996), for which he received positive reviews.

In 2005, Macchio played himself in the TV series Entourage. He appeared in the 2007 music video for the song 'Sweep the Leg' by No More Kings as a caricature of himself and Daniel from The Karate Kid. He then appeared in several episodes of the TV series Ugly Betty (2008-2009) as Archie Rodriguez, a local politician, with a semi-regular role as Hilda's (Ana Ortiz) love interest on the show.

In 2011, he competed on Dancing with the Stars, but was eliminated during the semi-finals, placing fourth in the overall competition. He produced a series for the National Geographic Channel, American Gypsies, and was cast in the film Hitchcock (Sacha Gervasi, 2012), starring Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren. The film is based on the non-fiction book 'Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho,' and Macchio portrays Psycho screenwriter Joseph Stefano. In 2013, he appeared as himself in an episode of How I Met Your Mother and in the film He's Way More Famous Than You (Michael Urie, 2013). In 2016, Macchio co-starred with Mario Cantone in the Off-Broadway production 'A Room of My Own'.

When he was 15, Ralph Macchio was introduced by his grandmother to his wife, Phyllis Fierro. Fierro is a nurse practitioner. They married in 1987 and have two children, Julia (1992) and Daniel (1996). Macchio and his son, Daniel, made a series of shorts about safe driving for State Farm. In 2017, Macchio made a comeback on TV. He had a recurring role in the TV series The Deuce (2017-2019) with James Franco. He also reprised his role as Daniel LaRusso in Cobra Kai (2018–2025), an action comedy-drama series presented in an episodic storytelling format. He is also a co-executive producer of the series, along with co-star William Zabka. The series is set 34 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament and revolves around a down-and-out Johnny Lawrence (Zabka), who, seeking to get his life back on track and obtain redemption for his defeat in the 1984 tournament, reopens the Cobra Kai dojo. This reignites his rivalry with a now-successful LaRusso, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his now-deceased mentor, Mr. Miyagi.

Actor Pat Morita also passed away. During Morita's funeral procession in 2005, Macchio gave a brief eulogy and ended it as quoted, "Forever, my Sensei" to the mourners. In 2022, Macchio published his memoir 'Waxing On: The Karate Kid and Me, where he reflects upon the legacy of the Karate Kid films and Cobra Kai. The book became a New York Times bestseller. Macchio received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2024. In 2025, Macchio teamed up with Jackie Chan to again reprise the role of Daniel LaRusso in Karate Kid: Legends (Jonathan Entwistle, 2025), also with Ben Wang.
