Hannelore Bollmann

German actress Hannelore Bollmann (1925-2023) was a popular star of comedies and Heimatfilms in the 1950s. She often starred in the films of Franz Antel, then her husband.

Hannelore Friedel Bollmann was in 1925 born as the daughter of chamber singer Hans-Heinz Bollmann in Hamburg, Germany. About her birthdate the internet sources don’t agree: was she born in 1923 (Filmportal.de), 1925 (Wikipedia and IMDb) or 1930 (according to her friend Jürgen A. Brückner)?

However, her career started after the Second World War when she was cast in the comedy Herzkönig/King of Hearts (Helmut Weiss, 1947).

In the 1950s, Bollmann mainly played supporting roles in comedies like Ehe für eine Nacht/Marriage for One Night (Victor Tourjansky, 1953) with Gustav Fröhlich, and Heimatfilms like Auf der grünen Wiese/On the Green Meadows (1953, Fritz Böttger).

Remarkable was her role in Das Sonntagskind/The Sunday Child (Kurt Meisel, 1956) with Heinz Rühmann and Walter Giller.

She also stood out in the Austrian comedy Eva küsst nur Direktoren/Eva Only Kisses Directors (Rudolf Jugert, 1957) with Chariklia Baxevanos and Joachim Fuchsberger.

Franz Antel

Hannelore Bollmann was married from 1953 to 1958 to film director Franz Antel. Antel directed her in a series of films, including Rosen aus dem Süden/Roses from the South (1954), Verliebte Leute/People in Love (1954), Spionage/Espionage (1955) with Ewald Balser, and Heimatland/Homeland (1955) starring Rudolph Prack.

Der Kongreß tanzt/The Congress Dances (Franz Antel, 1955) was a remake of the classic musical Der Kongreß tanzt (Eric Charell, 1931). Johanna Matz played the Lilian Harvey role of Christl Weinzinger, and Bollmann played her friend Babette.

Her final film with Antel was Der Schatz vom Toplitzsee/The Treasure of Toplitzsee (Franz Antel, 1959) with Joachim Hansen.

Shortly after the production of the film they divorced. Her last film role was in the comedy Der Kongreß amüsiert sich/Congress of Love (Géza von Radványi, 1966) starring Lili Palmer.

Hannelore Bollmann married the producer Rudolf Travnicek with whom she had a son. After her retirement from acting in the mid-60s she latterly resided in Los Angeles and remarried once more and used the name Hannelore Bollmann-Cantor. She died in Santa Barbara, California in 2023, at the age of 97 and was survived by her son, Sascha (1962).
