In the sixties the French company Publistar with locations in Marseille and Brussels published many colour postcards en collector cards of film and pop stars. Recording companies, like Vogue, used the cards as promotional advertisement for their Yé-yé artists with a list of their current singles, EPs and/or albums on the back. Here are 20 dazzling Publistar cards from our collection.

Popular French singer and actor Leny Escudéro (1932-2015) did not want to be a star. He performed his songs to help others. Escudero also appeared in committed roles in films and on TV.

American singer and actress Nancy Holloway (1932-2019) sang jazz, pop and soul and was popular during the 1960s in France, where she continued to perform and live. She also performed in a dozen French films.

Marie Laforêt (1939-2019) was a French singer and actress of Armenian descent. After her first appearance in the drama Plein Soleil (René Clément, 1960) opposite Alain Delon, she became very popular and interpreted many roles in the 1960s. As a singer, she is known for 'Marie douceur, Marie colère', her version of the Rolling Stones hit 'Paint It Black'.

Elegant Catherine Deneuve (1943) is an icon of the French cinema who has graced the screen for more than five decades. She gained recognition in the 1960s for her portrayal of cool, mysterious beauties in classic films by directors like Luis Buñuel, Roman Polanski and François Truffaut. Apart from being a great actress, she is also an archetype for Gallic Beauty. From 1985 to 1989, she succeeded Brigitte Bardot as the model for the national symbol Marianne, seen on French coins and stamps.

One of Italy's best-loved artists, Adriano Celentano (1938) has been equally successful in film and music. Since starting his career as a rock ‘roll singer in 1957, Adriano Celentano has released 40 albums. This superstar of Italian pop music is also active as a songwriter, comedian, film director and TV host.

Flamboyant singer and actor Johnny Hallyday (1943-2017) was the father of French Rock and Roll. He was a European teen idol in the 1960s with record-breaking crowds and mass hysteria, but he never became popular in the English-speaking market. In later years he concentrated on being an actor and appeared in more than 35 films.

Singer, actress and composer Petula Clark (1932) is the most successful British female solo recording artist. She began as Britain's Shirley Temple and appeared in over 30 films. During the 1960s she became internationally known for her upbeat hits, including the evergreen 'Downtown'.

Beautiful French actress Brigitte Bardot (1934) was the sex kitten of the European film industry. BB starred in 48 films, performed in numerous musical shows, and recorded 80 songs. After her retirement in 1973, she established herself as an animal rights activist and made vegetarianism sexy.

French pop singer Sylvie Vartan (1944) was one of the first rock girls in France. She was the diva of the yé-yé genre. With Johnny Hallyday, she formed France's Golden Couple of their generation and they performed in several films, together and apart.

French actor and singer Fernand Raynaud (1926-1973), was one of the most renowned standup comedians of the 1950s and 1960s. He began his career playing and singing in cabarets and music halls, then he became a national star thanks to television. He played typical, average Frenchmen, making funny faces and using mime and slapstick humour.

French singer and songwriter Michel Paje (1945) was one of the yéyé pop stars of the early 1960s. He worked for the cinema as an actor and composer and is now known as a voice actor under his real name Michel Roy.

Belgian actor Jean-Claude Drouot (1938) started his acting career with a boom in the cult TV series Thierry La Fronde (1963-1966) and with Agnes Varda’s controversial masterpiece Le Bonheur (1965). Although he went on to appear in many film, TV and stage roles he would never completely lose the image of Thierry la Fronde, the French Robin Hood.

French singer, actress and astrologer Françoise Hardy (1944-2024) was the original Yé-yé girl of the sixties with her trademark jeans and leather jacket. She occasionally appeared in international films of the 1960s, and she remained an iconic figure in fashion, music and style.

Roger Moore (1927-2017) will always be remembered as the guy who replaced Sean Connery in the James Bond series, but he was also our favourite Ivanhoe, Saint and Persuader on TV.

French singer and actor Jacques Dutronc (1943) is with his nonchalant playboy image and his legendary irony one of the most popular performers in the French-speaking world. He wrote successful songs for his later wife Françoise Hardy in the 1960s before moving on to pursue a successful solo career. In 1973, he branched out into film acting and earned a Cesar for Best Actor in 1992 for the leading role in Van Gogh (1992).

French-Italian singer, jazz musician and actor Nino Ferrer (1934-1998) was an immensely popular pop star during the second half of the 1960s. 'L'homme a tout faire' (The Jack of all Trades) also appeared in seven films.

Though sometimes dismissed in France as little more than a 'chanteur de charme' ('a ladies' singer') Julien Clerc (1947) in fact enjoyed one of the most successful and longest-lived careers in contemporary French pop. He shaped the nouvelle chanson aesthetic across a span of decades that began in the shadow of the student rebellions of 1968 with the hit 'La Cavalerie' and continued well into the following century with such evergreens as 'Si on Chantait' and 'This Melody'.
