CACITEL S.L.

Spain produced many interesting film postcards and collector cards. Already in the Silent era, countless minicards, chromos and 'postales' (postcards) were published of both stars and their films. While the films are sometimes lost, they offer a glimpse of what could be seen in the cinema. After the Franco regime ended, the Spanish cinema bloomed with the masterpieces of such filmmakers as Carlos Saura, Bigas Luna and Pedro Almódovar. The film collectables from this period are also interesting. Today, we present 16 postcards published by CACITEL S.L. (or Cacitel) with international stars.

Modern stars in colour

From 1989 on, CACITEL SL (or just Cacitel), located in the Spanish capital Madrid, published many Spanish-language books, brochures, magazines, inserts, loose sheets and collectables on film culture. The director is editor, writer and film producerJose Manuel Gonzalez-Fierro Santos.

The firm published popular books on such celebrities as Elizabeth Taylor ('Elizabeth Taylor, una vida de cine, sexo y alcohol' by Javier Cuesta Moreno, 2001), Audrey Hepburn ('Audrey Hepburn en el recuerdo' by Cristina Yuste, 2013) and Romy Schneider ('Romy Schneider. Un Mito Europeo de Belleza y Tragedia' by Luis Miguel Carmona, 2015). Cacitel later also published books on Spanish actresses like 'Maria Jose Cantudo. La Trastienda de una Actriz' (2017) by Tony Aliaga Carratalá.

Cacitel also made colourful books on such subjects as awards ('Los Oscars de 2010' by Norman McGregor, and 'Los globos de oro del ano 2007', 2011), on several film genres like 'Los 100 mejores melodramas de la historia del cine' (The 100 best melodramas in the history of cinema) and 'Los 100 Mejores Musicales de la Historia del cine' (The 100 Greatest Musicals in Film History, 2004) and of course on the "goddesses of the Spanish cinema, 'Las Diosas del Cine Español' (2012) by Tomás Pérez Niño.

Luis Miguel Carmona wrote the big coffee-table books 'Guerra de la Independencia. Imágenes en cine y televisión' (War of Independence. Images in film and television, 2007) and 'Las mejores bandas sonoras originales de la historia del cine' (The best original soundtracks in film history) for Cacitel. Our favourite Cacitel book is 'La Cartelería del Cine Español en Japón'(2017) by Ambrosio Carrión Sánchez. It's a curious compilation of more than 200 Japanese posters designed to promote Spanish films in Japan.

Around 1990, Cacitel published more than 100 postcards in collections such as 'Estrellas de actualidad' (modern stars in colour) and 'Mitos Cinematográficos' (Hollywood stars of the 1950s and 1960s in black and white). Although the photographers were seldom mentioned on the cards, their glamorous photos are excellent and colourful and show Michelle Pfeiffer, Julia Roberts and Keanu Reeves in their prime.
